DOWNLOAD THE LIST HERE.
Colleagues:
About 4 years ago (I say sheepishly), I asked this listserv to give
me their list of forest soils classic and hot papers. The idea
was
that I would then share this complied list with the listserv as
repayment. My primary objective for producing this list was to assist
me in a graduate seminar class that I teach every other year on this
general topic.
Well, better late then never, attached you will find this said list.
Part of the delay is that I did not teach the course two years later
(I was on sabbatical) and the usual (it was not near the top of my
priority list). I apologize to all those folks that responded to
my
request in a timely manner only to find my response to them less than
timely.
Some quick notes on the list:
1) I have expanded the context of this list to include not only
"forest soils," but also ecosystem ecology, in part because many of
the suggested papers fell into this area and also because of my own
interests.
2) I have not edited the suggestions. I included every paper that
someone suggested, I only removed duplications or papers that did not
fit into the topical areas (only a few cases).
3) In order to give some weight to the suggested papers, I searched
for the number of times cited using Google Scholar for each
publication. I realize that ISI Web of Science would be more
thorough, but my institution does not provide access to this
database. Although not a perfect solution for evaluating the
significance of a particular paper (or book, yes, some folks
suggested books and I included these), it does provide some insight
into impact on the scientific community.
4) I have not tried to break up the list into "hot" vs. "classic"
papers. I think all of us have a feel for this, but we might
break
them down differently. If anything, I think this list does a
better
job with the classics than the hot papers, especially because the
list is now cold (i.e., 4 years old).
Anyway, I hope you all find use for this list.
