The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology seeks a senior soil scientist with
experience in soil processes to provide strategic direction, lead bids and
manage projects in soils and sustainable land management.

The role of soils in the provision of ecosystem services from the local
landscape to regional and national scales is increasingly recognised across
the UK and worldwide. In addition soils are under increasing pressure for
food, energy and water security. CEH has a substantial, but distributed,
research portfolio in soils and the ecosystem services they deliver.
We seek a senior soil scientist with experience in soil processes to provide
strategic direction, lead bids and manage projects in soils and sustainable
land management.

Main duties:
The focus will be on developing a framework for quantifying ecosystem
services from the local to national scale and exploiting the major National
Capabilities, such as Countryside Survey, and new opportunities in
agri-environment experimentation, survey and monitoring. The post will
provide leadership towards greater integration of our soil science
capabilities and our broad portfolio of sustainable land management and
ecosystem service activities across CEH, linking also to the British
Geological Survey and the NERC community in general.
Skills required A degree in soil science or natural environment subject area
with either a PhD or direct experience in soil science and land management
and their translation into ecosystem service provision. Evidence of providing
a personal contribution to the development of novel soil science research and
land management research. Proven ability of innovation and working across
disciplines. An excellent international profile and publishing track record
with an H index in soil science and land management topics.
Candidates must also be able to demonstrate their understanding as to how
their research fits with the wider aims of environmental research within both
CEH and NERC.

The post requires a high degree of self motivation and evidence of inspiring
and leading teams to deliver large and complex projects to high quality
assurance standards.

Excellent team working skills are also essential to enable collaboration with
current staff and contribution to ongoing projects.

Evidence of developing successful funding proposals, running large
multi-partner projects and coordinating research across organizations or
sites is essential. You will also be required to demonstrate your personal
contribution to the development of innovative soil science and land
management research integrating with other disciplines - this may be through
a conceptual or numerical modelling approach.

Salary
The salary is £36,240 progressing to £48,230 per annum. In addition, NERC
offers 30 days’ annual leave and 10½ days’ public and privilege holiday
per annum.
